    Modelled after the US National Science Foundation I-Corps programme, PolyU Lean LaunchPad Programme (the “Programme”) is a 10-week, evidence-based entrepreneurship development programme targeting the University’s researchers and research teams to search for potential market and application of their technologies.


    With the guidance of industry advisors and mentors, the participating teams will conduct extensive market research with stakeholders to gain necessary business knowledge and real market insights, as well as to discover the ways to commercialize their research technologies through this experiential learning programme.

    Alan CHOW

    Chairman, Focus Capital Group Ltd

    Dr Chow, a serial entrepreneur and philanthropist, has nearly 30 years’ experience in business. He has his first IT start-up in Beijing, China in 1991. He is currently the Chairman of Focus Capital Group Ltd, a family office fund for start-ups and Focus Capital Investment Inc., a US based VC investing in technology companies since 2002. Recently he co-founded SmartBLKTrade Ltd, a HK startup deploying emerging technologies to disruptive the global physical commodities legacy ecosystem. Apart from that, he convened the setup of a charitable community, AI Lab, dedicates to promote deep technology, with focus on Artificial Intelligence, blockchain and cybersecurity for the Hong Kong community.

    With background from startups to Listco, MNC and Fortune 500, Dr Chow has successfully brought a start-up company listed in Singapore and Hong Kong mainboard within 4 years’ time and served as the Chairman of Investment Committee and Executive Director. Projects investment size exceeds USD 100 million for Asia, covering from technology to resources, supply chain to manufacturing.

    Dr Chow is also regularly invited as advisor, mentor, speaker, judge, sponsor, lecturer and professor of events and courses by universities, non-profit making entity, professional and regulatory bodies in HK, China, USA, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and Australia.

    He is an alumnus of HKPU, HKU and RMU of China and received his professorship from SUIBE and JUFE.



    Alvin WONG

    Veteran in Multi Identities


    Alvin was a veteran fashion practitioner commencing as early as early 80s and had engaged deeply in design, marketing, merchandising, R & D and sourcing & logistics of fashion industry with global exposures. His passion in improving operation systems in his business towards higher value chain enhancements pioneered the supply chain management models developed a decade thereafter. He disrupted manufacturing norms with new perspectives in which the first few manufacturers adopted eventually became leaders of their trades.

    For some family reasons, Alvin shifted his career in building industry in mid 90s. He built infrastructures in MTR stations to enable mobile network connected in subway. His talent in project management in perfect team building and holistic problem-solving gained him credits from his client. MTRC continuously invited him to participate in various challenging projects to ensure a better project control.

    Not long after retiring, Alvin was invited as a consultant for a renowned outdoor furniture retailer and successfully digitalized the business by cloud solutions which in turn increased their competitiveness and saving up to one million within one year.

    Alvin is currently a visiting lecturer in PolyU teaching Fashion Supply Chain Management and Global Fashion Marketing. He had been highly recognized by his students.

    Although graduated from fashion and obtained a BA in business and earned a Master degree in Global Fashion Management with Dean Honour lists, Alvin was profoundly actualized himself by successfully integrating and applying his knowledge in both fashion and construction industry.



    Andrew CHEN

    Andrew H. Chen is Managing Partner of Arion Ventures. Arion Ventures is a strategic advisory firm that provides various management consulting services including strategic introductions and strategy consulting.

    He also currently lectures a graduate course on emerging technology and entrepreneurship part-time at the School of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is also a member of the board of advisors of Ampd Energy, a venture backed energy storage company based in Hong Kong.


    Prior, Andrew was the Founder and CEO of Menuscript, a cloud based omnichannel digital menu platform that also functioned as a mobile/desktop website and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software for restaurants. Previously he also worked as a corporate consultant for 4 years, where he worked with a wide range of organisations to solve strategic issues. Through his engagements he has worked with early stage ventures, Fortune 500 companies, academic institutions, non-profit organisations, and social enterprises.


    Andrew grew up in Toronto, Canada, is a graduate of University of Toronto where he graduated with high distinction and currently has resided in Hong Kong for 13 years.     Dr Dicky SHEK

    Dr. Dicky Shek is a veteran in the technology industry with more than two decades of executive and management experience for Greater China and APJ regions. Before joining the academia, Dr. Shek worked for a number of start-ups and well-established MNCs, including IBM, Compaq Computer, Dell, Cisco Systems, and NTT Communications Group.


    While managing multi-billions businesses, Dr. Shek has managed diverse functions including services, sales, marketing, products, brands, marketing communication, CRM, channel, vendor management, business planning, human resources, billing, finance and IT infrastructure. He has also rich experience in managing multicultural teams with staffs from many different nationalities. Apart from working in Hong Kong, Dr. Shek has been based in a number of cities in China.

    Currently, Dr. Shek is the Professor of Practice (MIS) in the Department of Management and Marketing of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He teaches MIS, marketing and management subjects for BBA, MBA, as well as MSc Programmes in Business Management, China Business Studies, Marketing Management, and Business Analytics.


    His interests in teaching, research and consultancy include Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, FinTech, CRM, Digital Marketing, e-Commerce, Media Theory, IT Security/Control & Audit, Knowledge Management, Virtual Reality, Design Thinking, Business Model Analysis, Corporate Social Responsibility, China Business and Executive Coaching.

    Prof. Frank YAM

    Professor Frank Yam is the Chairman and CEO of Focus Strategic Group Limited, a consulting firm providing Business and Technology advisory services, with special focus on Emerging Technologies and Innovation Leadership, Compliance, Internal Auditing, IT Auditing, Risk Management and Cyber-security. He has been very active in professional and community services and served in leadership role of numerous local and international professional bodies. Most notably, Professor Yam served six terms as the Director and International Vice President of ISACA International which has over 140,000 members around the world. He was also the founder of the ACFE Hong Kong Chapter.


    Professor Yam is a very popular speaker of a wide variety of topics at seminars and conferences for professional organisations and government agencies, including many Central Banks, the INTERPOL and the Asian Development Bank. In recent years, he has been focusing on promoting the awareness and best practices of Innovation based on Design-Thinking, Emerging Technologies (including Cloud Computing, IoT, Smart Cities, Big Data, AI, FinTech, and Blockchain), Corporate and IT Governance, Risk Management in the era of Disruption, and Cyber-security around the world.


    Professor Yam is the recipient of numerous awards for his contribution to the profession, including the prestigious International Best Speaker Award by ISACA International, and the top alumni honour, Alumni Achievement Medal, by the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics. He was elected as Fellow of several leading professional associations, including the Hong Kong Institute of Directors, the Hong Kong Computer Society, The Institute of Public Accountants, the Institute of Financial Accountants, and the Hong Kong IT Joint Council. Professor Yam also has an Executive Master degree in Innovation Leadership from HK PolyU with Distinction, and was honoured with the “Outstanding Student Award”.

    Janet has worked across the health and financial services sector in 5 different countries taking on diverse functions from strategy, operations, marketing to finance. She currently works with Matilda International Hospital doing Hospital Management. This includes overseeing the hospital’s Innovation and Technology (IT department), Pricing and Special Projects to improve operations via process re-engineering and transformation. Her passion is in Active Ageing and the Elderly, of which she was involved in the Age-Friendly Cities Project at World Health Organization.     Leo LO

    Leo is a seasoned marketer and has over 30 years’ experience in the field of hospital inbound logistic automation systems. Before starting his company in 2009, Leo worked and took a managerial role in Jardine Engineering Corporation Ltd. for the mechanical handling and logistic automation systems business over 16 years, serving both the industrial and healthcare sectors. During his service in Jardine Engineering, he had successfully introduced the pneumatic tube systems (PTS) to all major public hospitals under Hospital Authority for the automated transportation of blood specimens, drugs, medical samples, etc. between various in-house departments. After leaving Jardine Engineering in 2006, he joined the German PTS company as the Senior Manager serving the SEA region, managing the distributorship and channel sales not only in HK but also China, S. Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and Malaysia for 3 years.


    With his extensive manufacturers’ network and established healthcare clientele in Hong Kong, Leo had started his own business in 2009. It was his strong belief that robotic and automation systems for inbound logistics will be the future trend and sought-after solution by relocating a significant level of labor who was originally deployed in daily porter services to better serving the inpatients. EuroMed was the very first contractor in HK which introduced the Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) System to the new HK Children’s Hospital for the fully automatic and programmable transportation of linen trolleys, drug carts, and medical consumables etc. between different floors via laser navigation and wireless technologies. Nowadays robots and automatic systems are widely-accepted and can be found in many industries and hospitals in Hong Kong.


    Leo has a BSc(Hons) degree in Statistics and Mathematics from the CUHK, a MBA from PolyU, a MSc in e-Commerce & Internet Computing as well as a PgDip in China Business from HKU. Leo has actively participated many mentorship programs for local universities and he has been a mentor for the Faculty of Business at PolyU since 2002 and a visiting lecturer of the Institute of Entrepreneurship since 2018.


    Michael TSUI

    Mr Tsui is an outstanding entrepreneur who has established companies in developing innovative and technologically advanced medical devices for the healthcare sector. An occupational therapist by training, Mr Tsui has devoted tremendous efforts to spearheading new technologies in the field of medical device by introducing high-quality rehabilitation system to Hong Kong.


    He has been contributing to PolyU's biomedical research by providing funding for research projects including the development of "Exoskeleton robotic hand", with new trade name "Hand of Hope". This device has won many international awards, most notably the Gold Award and Grand Prix Award of the 40th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2012.


    Dr. Patrick LAM

    Dr. Patrick Pak Ling Lam is Vice President of IPO Vetting in the Listing Division at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. At HKEX, he leads teams of market professionals and is responsible for advisory matters, policy guidance, and vetting of listing applications in the broader health ecosystem, focusing in the biotech sector where he has been in charge of >30+ listed issuers and >50 potential listed issuers to date.


    Prior to his career in capital markets, Patrick was a senior management consultant in the advisory arms of Monitor Deloitte and PwC Hong Kong and Greater China specializing in strategy and operations for both global and domestic private and public sector clients in the pharmaceutical, life sciences, and healthcare services segments, including the formulation and implementation of a multi-phase, large-scale target operating model and transformational journey underscoring the reform of China's health delivery system in recent years.


    Patrick completed his postdoctoral fellowship and obtained his PhD unraveling the mechanics of insulin secretion in health and disease at the University of Toronto under Professor Herbert Gaisano. He currently serves as an adviser to the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Fund and the Hong Kong Sciences and Technology Parks, and continues to inspire talents and generation of new leaders through his efforts in the Arts, continuing education, mentorship and community services."


    Dr. Leon Lam

    Dr Lam is a veteran in the healthcare industry with more than 20 years of management and executive experience across Asia Pacific for Fortune and US-listed companies such as Bristol-Myers Squibb, Stryker and Merit Medical. Outside of his job, Leon gives guest lectures to MBA and Master level programs and was invited to speak in regional industry conferences as well as to contribute in international magazine.


    Leon holds a Doctor of Business Administration from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a MPhil in Neuroscience (HKU) and a Bachelor in Biophysics from the University of Toronto.     Founder of Telemax Environmental and Energy Management Ltd (TEEM) with more than 20 years experience in consultancy work on Building Services, Energy Management and Green Building in various kinds of buildings.     Before founding TEEM, Ir Eagle Mo has worked in consultant firms for more than 1 3 years, including ACE and PBA.     Dr. Neo CHAN

    Dr Neo Chan is a member of CIC Committee on BIM, a member of the BIM Assessment Panel of CIC’s BIM Personnel Certification and Training Course Accreditation Schemes and a member of the BIM Vetting Sub-committee on CITF. He was the Chairman (2017-2019) of HKIBIM and was awarded as the Young BIMer 2014 of the Year and Construction Industry Outstanding Young Person 2019 by CIC. He has fully engaged himself in BIM development and promotion for Hong Kong construction industry for over a decade.
    Dr Chan is a founder of VirCon Limited. He has been focusing and working on the execution of BIM since 2005. He is one of the BIM pioneers in HK in the research and provision of BIM services and Virtual construction for A/E/C industry. He manages currently over 200 BIM professional and technical staff to execute more than 300 BIM projects.


    Ian LEE

    Ian Lee is the Solution Director at Schneider Electric. In his current role, Ian is responsible for overseeing and driving innovative and sustainable solutions for customers. He joined Schneider in 2012 and has more than 30 years of solid experience in the industry. Prior to his current role, Ian has served reputable organizations, including CLP Engineering, CLP Power, and Parsons Brinckerhoff (Asia) Ltd. Ian holds an MBA degree from the University of Hong Kong, a Bachelor degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and is a member of the HKIE, CIBSE, ASHARE and EI. Currently he is also the committee member serving the HKIE Electrical Division. He also worked as a part-time lecturer at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Victoria University, and the School of Continuous and Professional Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.     The applicants / participating teams should have their research technologies which are:

    • Readily accelerated with TRL greater than 3*
    • Supported and endorsed by PolyU academic staff
    • Multi-disciplinary involvement from multiple departments is preferred
    • Use of university research facilities (e.g. 3D Printing Lab, Digital Manufacturing Lab) is encouraged.
    *TRL Level 3 = Proof-of-Concept Demonstrated, Analytically and/or Experimentally



    A team with at least one Student (Full-Time or Part-Time), Alumni or Research Staff of PolyU as the Entrepreneurial Lead.

    Selection Criteria

    • Technology Readiness of the Research Project - The maturity of the technology to go to market / commercialization
    • Commercialization Potential - Potential for having good application(s) / commercialization channel(s) for the technology
    • Applicants’ Background & Strength - The diversity and complementary strength of team members
    • Multi-disciplinary Involvement - If the team/the research technology involves multiple departments / domains
